The Hidden Census is a collaborative public history project of the Worcester Black History Project and the Nipmuc Indian Development Corporation that brings greater visibility to the Black and Nipmuc people who lived in Central Massachusetts during the Revolutionary era. Through community-based research, historical records, family histories, data visualization, public exhibitions, and educational resources, the project uncovers the lives of individuals and families who have long been present in the historical record but largely overlooked in traditional accounts of the American Revolution. By bringing these stories and relationships together, The Hidden Census reveals a more complex and complete picture of the region’s past—one that recognizes Black and Nipmuc people not as peripheral figures, but as individuals, families, and communities whose lives and experiences are essential to understanding the history of Central Massachusetts.
